PHL students join global kids in call for plastic-free oceans

Hundreds of students in Manila and Batangas have joined thousands of kids across the world in calling for plastic-free oceans, as listed Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI) locally cascaded its global partner’s ocean protection program in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Coinciding with the UN Global Goals Week in September, ATI along with its employee-volunteers caravanned from Manila to Batangas schools to rollout the Ocean Protection module under the successful Global Education Program (GEP) developed by global trade enabler DP World, ATI’s foreign equity partner.

The Ocean Protection Module, which supports of SDG 14: Life Below Water, raises greater awareness on the impact of plastic pollution on seas and engages students on ways to contribute to protecting the vital marine resource which serves as lifeblood of global trade and communities in general as source of food and livelihood.

As part of the child-friendly and interactive exercise, students expressed creative ideas and wrote down pledges on how to preserve the oceans as viable and sustainable economic resource for the future.

The Philippines contributed nearly 1,000 out of the close to 10,000 student pledges collected throughout the week-long global activity.

Following its successful pilot run in Manila in 2014, the GEP has already reached thousands of children across continents, educating them on the importance of sustainable ports in keeping world trade moving, while also imbuing positive behaviors and calling support among students and adults alike for affirmative action towards relevant environmental issues such as anti-illegal wildlife trade and recently ocean pollution reduction.

Chants of ‘Keep our Sea Plastic Free’ resonate across Manila and Batangas schools as students pledged for cleaner seas with the help of ATI’s and DP World’s Global Education Program on Ocean and Marine protection.
